“There is no such thing as a problem breed. However, there is no shortage of ‘problem owners’….”
When the 21 year old Cesar Millan crossed the border of the United States, all he wanted was a better life and the dream of becoming the best dog trainer in the world. By now he has his own television series, website, products and books which are all centered towards Cesar’s aim to help the relationship between pet and owner. In his book, A Member of the Family: Cesar Millan’s Guide to a Lifetime of Fulfillment with Your Dog, Cesar focuses on the bond between dog and owner in terms of family and gives several practical tips such as how to select the perfect dog, how to groom, discipline, and how to introduce it to new members of the family.
This book is all about conscious choices. Cesar guides you through the initial process of choosing a dog that fits your lifestyle starting with a self-reflecting exercise, to determine what type of person are you. Cesar’s theory about energy levels depending on breed and individual dogs helped dog owners around the world, and the book is ready to demonstrate this with many examples by clients too. The second chapter deals with adopting dogs from professional breeders or from a shelter and rescue. A well made decision can save the owners a great deal of medical costs not to mention that with this the so called “puppy mills” can be avoided too. Cesar shows us how we can reorganize our homes and its rules to establish a tranquil home for dog and family. The book also helps owners with puppies, describing the needs and problems of young dogs and suggests various methods to solve difficult or tiresome situations. There are also various advices on family trips and how to train your dog to get used to travelling. Cesar highlights the importance of dog healthcare and not only elaborates which vaccinations are necessary and which ones are not but also gives tips for relaxing activities that could make your dog happier, for example dog massage. Since the book is about the relationship between dog and family it is not unusual that there is a part about changes in the family and how dogs experience it. From introducing a newborn baby to introducing a new partner and even touching difficult topics like divorce and death in the family. All of this completed with chapters by Cesar’s own family, his wife Illusion and two sons Calvin and Andre.
A Member of the Family is a good book for beginner and experienced dog owners too. Its style is professional if necessary but still has great deal of enthusiasm and affection towards dogs just as we could see form Cesar Millan in his Dog Whisperes television show. Its examples and descriptions are not just of theoretical use but can be applied to pet directly. The book is also a great gift for fans because it lets them have a peek into the life of the Millan family and gives first-hand reports from Cesar’s wife and kids on how these principles affected their life. A Member of the Family: Cesar Millan’s Guide to a Lifetime of Fulfillment with Your Dog is a both a good read and a very useful handbook which deserves a place on the bookshelves of dog lovers.
